VIII. Developmental Considerations: How the Mismatch Signature Forms
8.1 Neurodevelopmental Foundations
The Mismatch Signature is not typically a sudden emergence in adulthood. Its developmental trajectory can be traced through the neurodevelopmental history of ADHD and related conditions. Children with ADHD accumulate, by school age, substantially more experiences of criticism, correction, social exclusion, and performance failure than their neurotypical peers — a cumulative exposure to rejection-adjacent experiences that is not simply a consequence of behavior but also of neurological differences in the processing of social information (Mikami, 2010).
Crucially, this accumulated exposure does not typically desensitize the ADHD nervous system to rejection cues. Instead — and this is a critical developmental observation — the combination of a neurobiologically sensitized threat-detection system and repeated early rejection experiences produces a pattern of sensitization rather than habituation. The rejection schema (in cognitive terms) or the social threat network calibration (in neurobiological terms) becomes more rather than less reactive over developmental time, establishing the conditions in which minor cues trigger major responses — the mature Mismatch Signature.
8.2 Attachment Theory and the Relational History of Mismatch
Attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969; Ainsworth et al., 1978) offers a complementary developmental account. Individuals whose early attachment experiences were characterized by inconsistent, critical, or emotionally unpredictable caregiving develop internal working models organized around the expectation of relational unreliability. For children with ADHD — whose behavior frequently elicits frustration, correction, and inconsistent responses from caregivers — the combination of an attachment system calibrated to relational unreliability and a neurobiologically sensitized social threat detector creates the developmental substrate in which the Mismatch Signature becomes structurally organized.
The ambiguous cue — the unanswered message, the slightly cool tone, the unconvinced facial expression — becomes legible to the RSD nervous system as an attachment threat precisely because the attachment system has been trained on a history of ambiguous cues that did turn out to be rejection-significant. The mismatch is, in a developmental sense, the residue of a nervous system that learned to treat ambiguity as danger — a learned heuristic that was once adaptive and has become, in adult social contexts, systematically miscalibrated.
