Variant — Chapter 500. Appendix B: Complete VIA Character Strengths Reference

The 24 Character Strengths: Virtues, Expressions, and Luminous Practices

"Character strengths are not what you do well — they are who you are at your best. They represent the virtues that arise naturally from your deepest values, the moral excellences that define your most authentic self."

The VIA (Values in Action) Classification of Character Strengths, developed by Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson, identifies 24 universal character strengths organized under six broad virtues. Unlike talent-based assessments, character strengths reflect your moral and psychological core — the virtues that guide how you engage with the world.

For each strength, this reference provides:

  • Core Description: The essential nature of the virtue
  • Luminous Expression: The strength at its fullest, most generative form
  • Shadow Side: How the strength manifests when overused or unbalanced
  • Integration with CliftonStrengths: How the character strength commonly interacts with talent themes
  • Luminous Practice: A specific practice for deepening your relationship with this virtue

Virtue I: Wisdom and Knowledge

Cognitive strengths that entail the acquisition and use of knowledge

1. Creativity (Originality, Ingenuity)

Core: The ability to think of novel and productive ways to conceptualize and do things. Goes beyond artistic creativity to include adaptive problem-solving in any domain.

Luminous Expression: Brings fresh perspectives that transform stale situations. Sees possibilities where others see dead ends. Creates beauty, utility, and meaning through original thinking. Makes life an ongoing creative experiment.

Shadow Side: Novelty addiction — always seeking the new at the expense of the proven. Dismissing conventional approaches that actually work. Creating for the sake of being different rather than for genuine value. Restlessness with routine.

CliftonStrengths Integration: Often pairs with Ideation (idea generation), Strategic (creative problem-solving), and Futuristic (imagining new possibilities). When Creativity meets Achiever, it produces prolific creative output. When it meets Deliberative, it produces careful, refined innovation.

Luminous Practice: The Daily Creation — Each day, create something small that didn't exist before: a new phrase, a novel arrangement, a fresh approach to a routine task. Build evidence that your creativity is always available, not just in "creative" moments.

2. Curiosity (Interest, Novelty-Seeking, Openness)

Core: A deep interest in ongoing experience. Finding subjects and topics fascinating. Exploring and discovering. A willingness to embrace ambiguity and the unknown.

Luminous Expression: Approaches life with genuine wonder. Asks questions that open entirely new lines of inquiry. Creates learning environments through infectious interest. Makes others feel their experiences are worthy of exploration.

Shadow Side: Scattered attention — chasing every interesting thing without depth. Using curiosity to avoid commitment. Invasive questioning that crosses boundaries. Information overload from insatiable hunger for novelty.

CliftonStrengths Integration: Naturally pairs with Learner (love of learning process), Input (gathering information), and Intellection (deep thinking). Curiosity amplifies every CliftonStrengths theme by adding a quality of openness and wonder.

Luminous Practice: The Curious Conversation — Weekly, ask someone a question you genuinely don't know the answer to about their life or expertise. Practice the art of not-knowing. Let curiosity be relational, not just intellectual.

3. Judgment (Open-Mindedness, Critical Thinking)

Core: Thinking things through and examining them from all sides. Not jumping to conclusions. Being able to change your mind in light of evidence. Weighing evidence fairly.

Luminous Expression: Makes wise decisions that account for multiple perspectives. Protects communities from groupthink. Models intellectual honesty and the courage to change positions. Creates space for nuanced thinking in polarized environments.

Shadow Side: Decision paralysis from perpetual weighing of options. Cold detachment disguised as objectivity. Skepticism that undermines trust and enthusiasm. Using critical thinking to avoid emotional engagement.

Luminous Practice: The Perspective Switch — When you form a strong opinion, spend 15 minutes genuinely arguing the opposite position. Not as devil's advocate, but with real intellectual effort. Build the muscle of holding multiple truths.

4. Love of Learning

Core: Mastering new skills, topics, and bodies of knowledge, whether on one's own or formally. Goes beyond curiosity to include the systematic deepening of understanding.

Luminous Expression: Develops genuine expertise that serves others. Models the joy of lifelong learning. Creates and shares knowledge that elevates the community. Approaches mastery with patience and delight.

Shadow Side: Perpetual student who never becomes a practitioner. Using learning as avoidance of action or commitment. Intellectual elitism. Valuing academic knowledge over experiential wisdom.

Integrating VIA and CliftonStrengths: The Luminous Constellation

Your Luminous Strength Constellation™ emerges at the intersection of your CliftonStrengths talent themes and your VIA character strengths. Together, they answer two complementary questions:

  • CliftonStrengths: What do you naturally do best? (Talent)
  • VIA Character Strengths: Who are you at your moral and psychological best? (Character)

When you map your top 5-10 CliftonStrengths alongside your top 5-7 VIA strengths, patterns emerge that reveal your signature excellence — the unique way you contribute to the world that no one else can replicate.

<aside>

Creating Your Constellation

  1. Take both assessments (CliftonStrengths at [gallup.com](http://gallup.com), VIA at [viacharacter.org](http://viacharacter.org))
  2. List your top CliftonStrengths themes alongside your top VIA character strengths
  3. Look for resonances — where do talents and virtues reinforce each other?
  4. Look for tensions — where might a talent and a virtue pull in different directions?
  5. Notice the unique combination — no one else has exactly this constellation
  6. Name your constellation — give it a title that captures its essence

This constellation is your developmental home base — the place from which all authentic growth radiates.
