The Art and Science of Measuring How You Think
There is a particular kind of courage required to look honestly at your own mind.
Not the dramatic courage of a battlefield or a stage, but the quieter courage of turning your attention inward and asking: How do I actually process the world? What are the patterns I have been living inside of without ever naming them? And what might change if I could see them clearly?
This chapter is about assessment — the art and science of making the invisible visible. We will examine what makes a psychological assessment trustworthy (and what makes it snake oil), survey the existing landscape of cognitive style measurement, introduce the Luminous Cognitive Style Inventory (LCSI) in detail, explore how to interpret your results through the Cognitive Signature Report, offer a simplified Quick Profile for those who want a lighter entry point, and — because no chapter in this book would be complete without it — name the ethical responsibilities that accompany any attempt to measure the human mind.
But before we dive into instruments and protocols, let us pause to honor what is at stake. Assessment is not a neutral act. Every time we measure something about a person, we are making implicit claims about what matters, what is real, and what is worth paying attention to. A poorly designed assessment can flatten the very complexity it claims to capture. A well-designed one can be a mirror that helps someone see themselves with unprecedented clarity — not as a label, but as a landscape.
The Luminous approach to assessment is guided by a single principle: measure in service of illumination, never in service of reduction. We are not trying to put you in a box. We are trying to hand you a lantern.
What Makes a Good Assessment? The Psychometric Foundation
Before we examine specific instruments, we need to establish the criteria by which any assessment should be judged. The science of psychological measurement — psychometrics — has developed rigorous standards over more than a century. These standards are not arbitrary academic requirements; they are safeguards against the very real danger of measuring something badly and then acting on the results as though they were true.
The four foundational criteria are: reliability, validity, standardization, and fairness.
Reliability: Does It Measure Consistently?
Reliability refers to the consistency of an assessment's results. If you take the same test twice under similar conditions, do you get the same result? If two trained assessors evaluate the same person, do they reach the same conclusions?
There are several types of reliability:
- Test-retest reliability: The degree to which scores remain stable over time. As we discussed in Chapter 2, the MBTI's test-retest reliability is disappointingly low — a significant red flag. A good cognitive style instrument should demonstrate test-retest correlations of at least .70, and ideally above .80, over a period of several weeks.
- Internal consistency: The degree to which items within a single scale measure the same construct. If a scale is measuring "holistic processing," all items on that scale should correlate with each other. This is typically measured by Cronbach's alpha, with values above .80 considered good.
- Inter-rater reliability: For assessment components that involve human judgment (interviews, behavioral observation), the degree to which different trained assessors agree on their ratings.
Reliability is the floor, not the ceiling. An assessment can be perfectly reliable and still be measuring the wrong thing. But an assessment that is not reliable cannot be measuring anything meaningful.
Validity: Does It Measure What It Claims?
Validity is the more philosophically interesting criterion. It asks: does this instrument actually measure the construct it claims to measure? There are several dimensions of validity:
- Content validity: Do the items on the assessment adequately represent the full range of the construct being measured? A cognitive style inventory that only asks about work-related scenarios may miss important dimensions of how you think in relationships, creative pursuits, or moments of crisis.
- Construct validity: Does the assessment relate to other measures in theoretically predicted ways? A measure of holistic processing should correlate moderately with measures of field dependence (a related but distinct construct) and should not correlate highly with measures of intelligence (since cognitive style is independent of cognitive ability).
- Predictive validity: Does the assessment predict real-world outcomes? If someone scores high on the Embodied dimension, do they actually make decisions differently in embodied versus cerebral contexts? This is the hardest form of validity to establish, and the most important.
- Ecological validity: Does the assessment capture how people actually think in their real lives, rather than only in artificial laboratory conditions? Many cognitive tests have excellent laboratory validity but poor ecological validity — they measure what people can do in a controlled setting, not what they habitually do in the wild.

A Luminous Note on Validity: The Luminous framework adds one more dimension of validity that traditional psychometrics does not typically address: phenomenological validity — the degree to which the assessment results resonate with the individual's lived experience. If your Cognitive Signature Report describes patterns that you do not recognize in yourself, and that people who know you well do not recognize either, then something has gone wrong — regardless of what the statistics say. Numbers that do not connect to felt experience are numbers that have lost their purpose.

Standardization: Is There a Meaningful Baseline?
Standardization refers to the process of establishing norms — statistical benchmarks that allow individual scores to be interpreted in context. Without norms, a raw score is meaningless. Saying "you scored 37 on the Holistic Processing scale" tells you nothing unless you know what the average score is, what the distribution looks like, and how your score compares to relevant reference groups.
Good standardization requires large, diverse samples that represent the populations for whom the assessment is intended. This is where many cognitive style instruments fall short — they are standardized on convenience samples (typically Western, educated, young adults) that do not represent the full diversity of human cognition.
The Luminous framework approaches standardization with a commitment to cultural inclusivity: norms are developed separately for different cultural contexts where significant differences in cognitive style distributions have been documented. A holistic processing score that falls at the 80th percentile in a Western sample might fall at the 50th percentile in an East Asian sample — and both of these placements carry important information.
Fairness: Does It Work Equally Well for Everyone?
Fairness in assessment means that the instrument does not systematically advantage or disadvantage any group of people based on characteristics unrelated to the construct being measured. An assessment of cognitive style should not be biased by gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, language background, or disability status.
Achieving fairness is an ongoing process, not a one-time achievement. It requires:
- Differential item functioning analysis: Statistical examination of whether specific items function differently across demographic groups.
- Culturally responsive item development: Writing items in collaboration with diverse communities, not just translating items that were developed in a single cultural context.
- Accommodation protocols: Clear guidelines for how to adapt the assessment for individuals with disabilities, language barriers, or other factors that might affect performance.

A Survey of Existing Cognitive Style Assessments
Before introducing the LCSI, it is useful to survey the existing landscape of cognitive style assessment. This is not an exhaustive review, but a representative sampling that illustrates both the achievements and the gaps in the field.
The Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT)
Developed by Witkin and colleagues, the GEFT measures field independence/dependence by asking participants to locate simple geometric shapes hidden within complex visual patterns. It is one of the most well-validated cognitive style instruments in existence, with strong reliability and genuine predictive validity.
Strengths: Behaviorally grounded (measures what people actually do, not just what they report), strong psychometric properties, extensive cross-cultural research base.
Limitations: Measures only a single dimension of cognitive style, has a strong spatial-perceptual component that may disadvantage certain populations, does not capture developmental change or contextual adaptation.
The Cognitive Style Index (CSI)
Developed by Christopher Allinson and John Hayes for use in organizational contexts, the CSI measures a single dimension from intuitive to analytical processing. It is widely used in business research and organizational development.
Strengths: Quick to administer (approximately 10 minutes), good reliability, useful in organizational settings.
Limitations: Reduces the richness of cognitive style to a single bipolar dimension, relies entirely on self-report, does not address embodied, relational, or developmental aspects of cognition.
The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI)
David Kolb's LSI, derived from his experiential learning theory, classifies individuals into four learning styles based on two dimensions: concrete experience versus abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation versus reflective observation.
Strengths: Well-grounded in learning theory, widely used in educational contexts, accessible and easy to understand.
Limitations: Controversial psychometric properties (some studies report poor reliability), conflates learning preferences with cognitive processing, categorical rather than dimensional, limited evidence for "matching" instruction to learning style.
The Rational-Experiential Inventory (REI)
Developed by Seymour Epstein and colleagues, the REI measures two independent processing modes: rational (analytical, deliberate, logical) and experiential (intuitive, automatic, holistic). Importantly, these are treated as independent dimensions, not as poles of a single continuum — a person can be high on both.
Strengths: Grounded in Cognitive-Experiential Self-Theory (CEST), treats processing modes as independent rather than oppositional, good reliability.
Limitations: Limited to two processing dimensions, relies on self-report, does not address somatic, relational, or developmental factors.
The Gap: What Existing Instruments Miss
When we survey the existing landscape, a pattern emerges. Most cognitive style instruments:
- Measure only one or two dimensions of a multi-dimensional phenomenon.
- Rely exclusively on self-report, which is vulnerable to social desirability bias, limited self-awareness, and the fundamental difficulty of accurately reporting on processes that are often automatic and unconscious.
- Treat cognitive style as static, offering a snapshot with no developmental orientation.
- Ignore the body, measuring cognition as a purely mental phenomenon.
- Ignore context, assuming that cognitive style is the same regardless of the relational, cultural, and situational environment.
The Luminous Cognitive Style Inventory was designed to address each of these gaps.
The Luminous Cognitive Style Inventory (LCSI)
The Luminous Cognitive Style Inventory (LCSI) is a comprehensive, multi-method assessment system designed to map the full landscape of an individual's cognitive functioning across the seven Luminous dimensions. It is not a single test but an integrated assessment protocol that combines multiple sources of evidence to create a rich, nuanced portrait.
The LCSI consists of five components, each designed to capture different facets of cognitive style that no single method could assess alone.
Component 1: The Dimensional Self-Report (DSR)
Format: 105 items (15 per dimension), each rated on a 7-point scale from "Never" to "Always"
Time: Approximately 25–35 minutes
What it measures: Your conscious awareness of your cognitive tendencies
The DSR is the most traditional component of the LCSI — a self-report questionnaire that asks about your typical patterns of thinking, perceiving, and processing across a wide range of contexts. Items are carefully written to be specific and behavioral rather than abstract and flattering.
For example, instead of asking "Are you a big-picture thinker?" (which is vague and socially desirable), the DSR might ask: "When you arrive at a new restaurant, what do you notice first — the overall atmosphere and feeling of the space, or specific details like the menu layout and table arrangement?"
The DSR is designed with several psychometric safeguards:
- Reverse-scored items to detect acquiescence bias (the tendency to agree with everything).
- Social desirability checks to identify respondents who may be presenting an idealized self-image.
- Context-specific items that ask about cognitive tendencies in different domains (work, relationships, creative pursuits, crisis situations) to capture the adaptive range rather than just the home territory.
Limitations acknowledged: Self-report is inherently limited by self-awareness. You cannot accurately report on cognitive processes that you are not conscious of. This is why the DSR is only one component of a five-part system.
Component 2: The Cognitive Task Battery (CTB)
Format: A series of standardized cognitive tasks administered on a computer or tablet
Time: Approximately 40–50 minutes
What it measures: Your actual cognitive processing patterns, independent of self-perception
The CTB is the behavioral counterpart to the DSR. Rather than asking you how you think, it observes what you actually do when presented with specific cognitive challenges.
Tasks include:
- An embedded figures task (adapted from the GEFT) to measure the Analytic ↔ Holistic dimension through perceptual performance.
- A decision speed task that measures Processing Rhythm by tracking how quickly you commit to answers under varying conditions of uncertainty.
- A divergent production task (similar to the Alternate Uses Task) that measures Generative Orientation by scoring the fluency, flexibility, and originality of generated responses.
- A spatial reasoning task paired with a verbal reasoning task to assess the relative strength of Verbal-Symbolic versus Imagistic-Spatial processing.
- A collaborative problem-solving simulation (virtual) that measures Relational Orientation by tracking how participants' responses change when they believe others are observing or contributing.
The CTB provides data that complements and sometimes challenges the self-report data from the DSR. It is common for someone to discover, for instance, that they believe they are highly analytical (DSR score) but actually perform more holistically (CTB score). This discrepancy is itself informative — it may indicate an adaptive range that the person has not fully recognized, or a cultural expectation that has shaped their self-concept without matching their actual processing patterns.
Component 3: The Relational Mapping Exercise (RME)
Format: A 30-minute structured dialogue with a trained facilitator
Time: Approximately 30 minutes
What it measures: How your cognitive style manifests in live relational interaction
The RME addresses one of the most significant gaps in traditional cognitive style assessment: the fact that cognition is always relational. How you think in isolation may differ significantly from how you think in dialogue, under social pressure, or in the presence of someone whose cognitive style differs from yours.
During the RME, a trained facilitator guides you through a series of increasingly complex conversational prompts — beginning with simple information-processing tasks and progressing to more ambiguous, emotionally charged, and value-laden scenarios. The facilitator is trained to notice:
- How your processing rhythm shifts in response to relational dynamics.
- Whether you seek consensus or maintain independent positions under social influence.
- How you use language — verbal precision, metaphor, gesture, spatial description — to communicate your thinking.
- Whether your body participates visibly in your cognitive process (posture shifts, gestural thinking, somatic reactions).
The RME is scored using a structured rubric, but it also generates qualitative observations that enrich the final Cognitive Signature Report. It is often the component that surprises people most — revealing cognitive patterns that are invisible in solitary self-assessment.
Component 4: The Somatic Awareness Protocol (SAP)
Format: A guided self-observation exercise
Time: Approximately 20 minutes
What it measures: The degree to which your body participates in your cognitive process
The SAP is the most distinctive component of the LCSI — and, for many participants, the most unfamiliar. It is a guided, structured exercise in which you are led through a series of cognitive challenges while maintaining awareness of your physical experience.
For example, you might be asked to consider a difficult decision while noticing: Where in your body do you feel the decision? Does the felt sense change as you consider different options? Is there a physical sensation associated with "knowing" the right answer?
The SAP does not require any prior experience with meditation, yoga, or somatic practices. It is designed to be accessible to people at every level of body awareness, including those who experience their cognition as entirely cerebral. The point is not to perform well but to observe honestly — and the observation itself often reveals patterns that were previously invisible.
Participants are scored on a Somatic Integration scale that considers both the degree of somatic participation reported and the congruence between somatic signals and cognitive conclusions. A person who consistently reports somatic signals that align with their ultimate decisions demonstrates high somatic integration; a person who reports somatic signals but consistently overrides them demonstrates a different pattern — one that is equally valuable to understand.

A Luminous Note: The SAP is sometimes met with skepticism by participants who identify as highly cerebral. "I don't feel decisions in my body," they say. And that is a perfectly valid observation — one that itself provides important information about their position on the Somatic Integration dimension. The SAP is not designed to prove that everyone is embodied. It is designed to reveal, with honesty and precision, where you actually are.

Component 5: The Developmental Interview (DI)
Format: A 45–60 minute semi-structured interview with a certified assessor
Time: Approximately 45–60 minutes
What it measures: The developmental trajectory and contextual range of your cognitive style
The DI is the integrative capstone of the LCSI. It is a one-on-one conversation in which a trained assessor explores your cognitive history, your awareness of your own processing patterns, your experience of cognitive style shifts across different life domains, and your sense of where growth is most alive for you.
The interview is semi-structured, meaning it follows a general arc but allows the assessor to follow the participant's unique story. It draws on methods from constructive-developmental assessment (inspired by Robert Kegan's Subject-Object Interview) and phenomenological interviewing (inspired by the research traditions of Amedeo Giorgi and Max van Manen).
The DI serves several purposes:
- Contextual calibration: It helps the assessor understand how the participant's scores on the DSR, CTB, RME, and SAP relate to the specific contexts of their life — their work environment, their relationships, their cultural background, their developmental history.
- Developmental mapping: It identifies the participant's current developmental edge — the dimension(s) where growth is most available and where the participant's own curiosity is naturally directed.
- Integration: It weaves together the quantitative and qualitative data from all five components into a coherent narrative that the participant can recognize as their own.
- Meaning-making: It creates space for the participant to reflect on their cognitive patterns and begin the process of conscious engagement with their own cognitive development.
The DI is, in many ways, the heart of the LCSI. Without it, the assessment risks becoming what we are trying to transcend: a number-generating machine that reduces the living complexity of a person's cognition to a set of scores. The interview ensures that the person behind the scores is always visible.
Interpreting Results: The Cognitive Signature Report
The culmination of the LCSI is the Cognitive Signature Report — a comprehensive document that integrates findings from all five components into a portrait of the individual's cognitive landscape.
The report includes five sections:
Section 1: Home Territory Profile
A visual and narrative description of your characteristic positions across the seven dimensions. This is presented as a dimensional map — a radar chart or similar visualization that shows your typical position on each spectrum — accompanied by a narrative description written in plain, evocative language.
The narrative avoids the Barnum effect by being specific and falsifiable. Rather than saying "You are a creative thinker" (which almost everyone would accept), it might say: "Your processing pattern shows a strong divergent orientation combined with holistic perception, which means you are likely to generate multiple unconventional solutions to any given problem — but you may find it genuinely difficult to narrow down to a single option without external structure or a convergent-thinking partner."
Section 2: Adaptive Range
A description of the span of positions you demonstrated across the five assessment components. For each dimension, the report shows not just where you typically stand but how far you stretched under different conditions — in the CTB tasks, in the relational context of the RME, under the self-observation conditions of the SAP.
The Adaptive Range section often contains the report's most surprising insights. Many people discover that their range is wider than they thought — that they have capabilities they have not been using — or narrower than they assumed — that their self-image includes capacities they do not actually demonstrate under real conditions.
Section 3: Dimensional Interactions
A discussion of how your positions on different dimensions interact to create your unique cognitive texture. As we explored in Chapter 4, the dimensions do not operate independently — they amplify, temper, and sometimes tension each other. This section identifies the most significant dimensional pairings in your profile and describes how they manifest in your thinking, your relationships, and your work.
Section 4: Developmental Edge
A gentle, invitational description of the dimensions where growth is most available to you. This section draws heavily on the Developmental Interview and is framed not as a deficit analysis but as an invitation to expansion. It identifies:
- The dimension(s) where your adaptive range is narrowest relative to what the assessment suggests is possible.
- The developmental trajectory suggested by your interview responses — where your own curiosity and life circumstances are naturally pulling you.
- Specific, practical suggestions for stretching into your developmental edge, drawn from the Luminous developmental practices described in Part III of this book.
Section 5: Practical Applications
Concrete recommendations for how to apply your cognitive signature understanding in the domains of your life that matter most — relationships, work, learning, creativity, leadership. These are not generic tips but profile-specific guidance informed by the unique pattern of your seven dimensions, your adaptive range, and your developmental edge.
The Quick Profile: A Simplified Assessment
We recognize that the full LCSI is a substantial commitment — requiring several hours and access to a trained assessor. Not everyone needs or wants that level of depth, especially at the beginning of their engagement with the Luminous framework.
For this reason, we offer the Luminous Quick Profile — a simplified, self-administered assessment that provides a first-draft sketch of your cognitive signature. The Quick Profile is included in Appendix B of this book and is also available online.
The Quick Profile consists of:
- 35 self-report items (5 per dimension), carefully selected from the full DSR to maximize information with minimal time investment. Completion time: approximately 10 minutes.
- Three brief self-observation exercises — simplified versions of tasks from the CTB and SAP that you can complete on your own. Time: approximately 15 minutes.
- A scoring guide that allows you to plot your approximate position on each of the seven dimensions and identify your most prominent dimensional interactions.
The Quick Profile is explicitly designed as an entry point, not a destination. Its psychometric properties are modest compared to the full LCSI — it has good internal consistency but limited test-retest reliability for any single dimension, and it cannot capture the adaptive range or developmental edge that the full assessment reveals.
Think of the Quick Profile as a sketch drawn from memory, and the full LCSI as a portrait painted from life. The sketch may capture something true and recognizable, but it lacks the depth, nuance, and precision of the full portrait. Use the Quick Profile to begin the conversation with yourself. If the conversation becomes important to you — and we hope it will — consider engaging with the full assessment.
Case Study: Tomás and the Quick Profile
Tomás, a middle school teacher, took the Quick Profile during a summer professional development workshop. His results suggested a strongly holistic, spontaneous, divergent, imagistic-spatial, connected, moderately embodied, and ambiguity-embracing profile — a pattern that explained both his extraordinary creative energy in the classroom and his chronic difficulty with lesson planning, grading rubrics, and administrative paperwork.
"For the first time," Tomás said, "I understood why lesson planning felt like trying to write poetry in a spreadsheet. It wasn't that I was bad at planning — it was that the planning tools I was given were designed for a completely different cognitive style than mine."
Tomás did not take the full LCSI. The Quick Profile was enough to catalyze a significant shift in how he organized his professional life. He designed a visual, mind-mapping approach to lesson planning that aligned with his imagistic-spatial orientation. He partnered with a colleague whose convergent-analytic style complemented his own for the tasks requiring systematic structure. And he stopped interpreting his difficulty with linear planning as a professional deficiency — recognizing it instead as a cognitive style mismatch that could be addressed through design rather than discipline.
This is the Quick Profile working as intended: not as a definitive measurement, but as a catalyst for self-awareness.

The Ethics of Assessment
We close this chapter where any responsible discussion of assessment must close: with ethics. The power to measure is the power to define, and the power to define is the power to include or exclude, to validate or pathologize, to illuminate or to reduce.
The Luminous approach to assessment ethics is organized around five commitments:
1. Informed Consent
No one should ever be assessed without understanding what is being measured, how the results will be used, and what the limitations of the assessment are. This applies to organizational settings, educational contexts, and coaching relationships. Assessment should always be voluntary and transparent.
2. Confidentiality
Cognitive style data is personal data. Results should be shared only with the individual's explicit consent. In organizational contexts, where teams may benefit from understanding each other's cognitive styles, sharing should be initiated by the individual, never mandated by management.
3. Non-Pathologizing Interpretation
The LCSI does not diagnose anything. It does not identify disorders, deficiencies, or defects. Every position on every dimension is described in terms of its gifts and growth edges, never in terms of deficit. An assessor who uses LCSI results to label someone as "deficient" or "disordered" is violating the framework's fundamental ethics.
This is especially important at the intersections of cognitive style and neurodiversity. A person whose cognitive profile includes extreme positions on certain dimensions may be neurodivergent — and the LCSI is not equipped to make that determination. If clinical concerns arise during an assessment, the appropriate response is a respectful referral to a qualified clinician, not an expansion of the LCSI's interpretive scope.
4. Cultural Humility in Interpretation
Assessors must interpret results within the cultural context of the individual being assessed. A strong Connected orientation in a participant from a collectivist culture may reflect cultural norms as much as individual tendencies — and this distinction matters for how the results are communicated and applied.
The Luminous framework does not claim that cultural influences on cognitive style are problems to be corrected. They are contexts to be understood — part of the ecological web in which every individual's cognition is embedded.
5. Ongoing Accountability
The developers of the LCSI commit to ongoing research, revision, and improvement of the instrument. Psychometric data are regularly reviewed. Fairness analyses are conducted with each new normative sample. And feedback from participants, assessors, and researchers is actively solicited and incorporated.
No assessment is ever finished. It is a living instrument in a living framework, and its ethics are only as good as the ongoing attention paid to them.

- The Self-Assessment Audit: Think about the personality or cognitive assessments you have taken in your life — MBTI, StrengthsFinder, Enneagram, learning style inventories, or any others. For each one, ask yourself: Did the result illuminate something about me, or did it primarily confirm what I already believed? Did it open possibilities, or did it close them? What would a truly illuminating assessment feel like?
- The Body-Mind Check-In: The next time you face a decision — even a small one, like choosing what to eat or how to respond to an email — pause for thirty seconds and notice: Is your body participating in the decision? Is there a felt sense, a tightness, an opening, a restlessness? You are conducting a miniature version of the Somatic Awareness Protocol. Notice what you find, without judgment.
- The Relational Mirror: Ask someone who knows you well to describe how they experience your thinking process — not your conclusions, but your process. How do you approach problems? How do you respond to ambiguity? Do you seem to think differently in different contexts? Their perspective is a free, informal version of the Relational Mapping Exercise — and it may reveal patterns that are invisible from the inside.

- How do you feel about being "assessed"? Is there excitement, anxiety, resistance, curiosity — or some combination? What does your reaction tell you about your relationship with self-knowledge?
- The chapter distinguishes between what people believe about their thinking (self-report) and what they actually do (behavioral assessment). Can you think of an area in your own life where your self-perception might differ from your actual cognitive patterns?

- The chapter argues that assessment should be "in service of illumination, never in service of reduction." What would it look like to apply this principle beyond cognitive style assessment — to the way you evaluate yourself, your colleagues, or your students?

🛠️ Practical Exercise: The Five-Minute Multi-Method Self-Assessment
This exercise gives you a taste of the multi-method approach used in the LCSI. It takes about fifteen minutes and requires only a pen and paper.
Step 1: Self-Report (3 minutes)
Return to the Cognitive Signature draft you created in the Chapter 3 exercise. Review your seven-dimension ratings. Do any of them feel different now, after reading Chapter 4's detailed descriptions? Adjust any ratings that seem inaccurate. Write a one-sentence explanation for any changes.
Step 2: Behavioral Observation (5 minutes)
Think of the last complex problem you solved — at work, at home, in a creative project. Reconstruct your actual process in as much detail as possible. Write it down in sequence, noting: What did you do first? How long did each phase take? Did you work alone or with others? Did you use visual aids, talk it through, or sit in silence?
Now compare your observed process with your self-report ratings. Are they consistent, or do you notice discrepancies?
Step 3: Somatic Check (3 minutes)
Close your eyes. Bring to mind a decision you are currently facing — it can be small or large. As you hold the decision in awareness, scan your body from head to feet. Notice any sensations: warmth, tightness, openness, heaviness, lightness, tingling, numbness. Write down what you notice, without interpretation.
Step 4: Relational Reflection (4 minutes)
Think of a person whose cognitive style seems very different from yours. Imagine explaining your approach to the problem from Step 2 to this person. What would you need to translate? What would be easy for them to understand, and what would be difficult? Write a few sentences.
Step 5: Integration
Look at the data you have gathered from these four mini-assessments. Do they tell a consistent story, or do they reveal tensions and surprises? The tensions are often the most interesting findings — they point to adaptive ranges, developmental edges, and aspects of your cognition that you may not have fully recognized.
Keep these notes. They will be a valuable reference point as we move into Part III of the book, where we explore how to apply cognitive style understanding in the domains of personal development, education, and the workplace.
