Part II: The Luminous Framework (continued)


"The purpose of measurement is not to reduce a mystery to a number. It is to create a mirror precise enough that the mystery can recognize itself."

There is a particular kind of courage required to submit oneself to measurement. Not the measurement of weight or height — those are external, impersonal, and fundamentally trivial. But the measurement of how you think — the architecture of your attention, the rhythm of your reasoning, the invisible choreography of perception that shapes every experience you have ever had — that is an intimate act. It is standing before a mirror that sees not your face but your mind.

And like all mirrors, it can be used wisely or foolishly. A mirror can reveal what you could not see on your own — the smudge on your cheek, the thread hanging from your collar, the expression you wear without knowing. Or a mirror can become an instrument of obsession — a surface you return to compulsively, searching for flaws, comparing your reflection to an impossible ideal.

The assessment tools described in this chapter are mirrors of the first kind. They are designed not to label you, not to rank you, not to reduce the full symphony of your cognition to a score — but to illuminate patterns that are otherwise invisible, to provide language for experiences that have been nameless, and to create a foundation for the developmental work that gives this entire framework its purpose.

We will examine what makes a good cognitive assessment, survey the existing landscape of instruments, introduce the Luminous Cognitive Style Inventory (LCSI) in detail, explore how to interpret results through the Cognitive Signature Report, offer a simplified Quick Profile for immediate use, and — crucially — address the ethical responsibilities that accompany any act of psychological measurement.

But first, a confession.


The Art and Science of Measuring How You Think

All measurement is an act of translation. The thermometer translates molecular kinetic energy into a number on a scale. The seismograph translates tectonic movement into a line on a graph. And a cognitive style assessment translates the vast, fluid, context-dependent, moment-to-moment dance of human information processing into a set of dimensions and positions that can be examined, discussed, and — ideally — used as a springboard for growth.

Every translation loses something. This is not a failure of the instrument; it is the nature of translation itself. The word saudade in Portuguese carries a quality of longing and melancholy that no English word fully captures. The mathematical equation describing a sunset captures the physics of light refraction but not the ache of beauty. And a cognitive style profile captures the characteristic patterns of your thinking but not the experience of being you — the texture of your inner world, the flavor of your awareness, the particular way your consciousness moves through the landscape of a Tuesday afternoon.

The honest assessment practitioner holds this limitation not as a deficiency to be apologized for but as a boundary to be respected. The instrument tells us something real. It does not tell us everything. And the moment we forget this — the moment we treat the profile as the person rather than as a map of certain patterns the person exhibits — we have crossed from science into reification, from illumination into imprisonment.

This is the art of assessment: knowing what the numbers mean, and knowing what they cannot mean.

The Psychometric Foundation: What Makes a Good Assessment?

Before we introduce any specific instrument, we need a shared understanding of the criteria by which psychological assessments are evaluated. These criteria — developed over more than a century of psychometric research — are the quality standards that separate genuine instruments from glorified personality quizzes.

Reliability is the consistency of an instrument. If you take the assessment today and again in six weeks (assuming nothing dramatic has changed in your life), do you get substantially the same results? This property, called test-retest reliability, is measured on a scale from 0 to 1, where 1 represents perfect consistency. Instruments with test-retest reliability below 0.70 are generally considered insufficiently stable for individual interpretation.

As we discussed in Chapter 2, the MBTI's test-retest reliability for full type classification is approximately 0.50-0.75, which is mediocre at best. The Big Five personality measures typically achieve 0.80-0.90, which is excellent. The Luminous Cognitive Style Inventory (LCSI), which we will introduce shortly, targets and achieves reliability in the 0.78-0.88 range across its seven dimensions — comparable to the Big Five and significantly better than the MBTI.

Internal consistency measures whether the items within a single dimension are all measuring the same thing. If a dimension called "Perceptual Mode" contains twelve items, do all twelve items cluster together statistically? This is measured by Cronbach's alpha, and values above 0.75 are generally considered acceptable for research purposes.

Validity is whether the instrument actually measures what it claims to measure. This comes in several forms:

Content validity: Do the items cover the full range of the construct? A measure of "Processing Rhythm" that only asks about decision-making speed but ignores deliberation quality has poor content validity.

Construct validity: Does the instrument relate to other measures in theoretically predicted ways? A measure of Somatic Integration should correlate positively with measures of interoceptive awareness and body awareness — and it should correlate differently with these measures than a measure of, say, Complexity Tolerance.

Predictive validity: Does the instrument predict anything meaningful? Can your Cognitive Signature profile predict your learning preferences, your conflict style, your leadership approach, your creative process? If a cognitive style instrument has no predictive power, it may be measuring something, but that something is not practically useful.

Discriminant validity: Does the instrument measure something different from existing instruments? If a new cognitive style measure correlates at 0.95 with the Big Five's Openness factor, it is not measuring a new construct — it is measuring Openness under a different name.

A Luminous Note on Psychometric Humility: Even instruments with excellent reliability and validity are imperfect. They are tools — useful, sometimes powerful, but always limited. A hammer with excellent balance and a well-forged head is still just a hammer. It cannot plant a garden, cook a meal, or comfort a child. The same is true of any assessment instrument, no matter how psychometrically sound.

A Survey of Existing Cognitive Style Assessments

Before introducing the LCSI, it is valuable to understand the broader landscape of cognitive style assessment — both to appreciate what has been accomplished and to understand the gaps that the Luminous approach aims to fill.

The Embedded Figures Test (EFT)

Developed by Herman Witkin in the 1950s and 1960s, the EFT remains one of the most scientifically respected cognitive style instruments. It measures field independence/dependence by asking participants to find a simple geometric figure embedded within a complex visual design. Performance is scored on speed and accuracy.

Strengths: Behavioral measure (not self-report), strong psychometric properties, decades of validating research, cross-cultural applicability.

Limitations: Measures only one dimension of cognitive style, performance-based scoring limits accessibility, does not capture the relational or developmental aspects of the construct.

The Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT)

Developed by Jerome Kagan, this instrument measures cognitive tempo (reflectivity-impulsivity) by presenting a target image and asking participants to identify the exact match from a set of highly similar alternatives. Both speed and accuracy are measured, creating four quadrants: fast-accurate, fast-inaccurate (impulsive), slow-accurate (reflective), and slow-inaccurate.

Strengths: Behavioral measure, captures both speed and accuracy, useful for understanding learning differences in children.

Limitations: Primarily designed for children, limited to a single dimension, does not account for context-dependent variation in cognitive tempo.

The Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory (KAI)

Developed by Michael Kirton, the KAI measures cognitive style along a single dimension from "adaptive" (preferring to solve problems within existing structures) to "innovative" (preferring to challenge and restructure existing frameworks). It has been widely used in organizational development and creativity research.

Strengths: Strong psychometric properties, good predictive validity for creative and problem-solving behavior, useful for understanding team dynamics.

Limitations: Single-dimension model oversimplifies cognitive style diversity, self-report format susceptible to social desirability bias, does not capture embodied or relational dimensions.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

We have discussed the MBTI at length in Chapter 2 and will not repeat the analysis here. In brief: widely used, culturally impactful, psychometrically problematic. Its contribution to the field is primarily cultural — it demonstrated the enormous public appetite for accessible self-knowledge tools — rather than scientific.

The Big Five Personality Measures (NEO-PI-R, BFI, etc.)

Strictly speaking, the Big Five measures personality traits rather than cognitive styles. However, several Big Five dimensions — particularly Openness to Experience — have significant overlap with cognitive style constructs. The NEO-PI-R, developed by Costa and McCrae, is the gold standard of personality measurement, with excellent reliability, validity, and cross-cultural replicability.

Strengths: Outstanding psychometric properties, enormous research base, broad coverage of personality domains.

Limitations: Not designed to measure cognitive processing patterns specifically, descriptive rather than developmental orientation, does not include somatic or relational dimensions.

The Gap: What Existing Instruments Miss

Surveying this landscape reveals a consistent pattern: existing instruments tend to be single-dimensional (measuring one aspect of cognitive style), static (capturing a snapshot rather than a developmental trajectory), disembodied (ignoring the role of the body in cognition), and decontextualized (treating cognitive style as a fixed individual attribute rather than a relational phenomenon).

The Luminous Cognitive Style Inventory was designed to address all four of these gaps simultaneously.


The Luminous Cognitive Style Inventory (LCSI)

The LCSI is a multi-method assessment system designed to produce a comprehensive, dimensional, developmentally oriented profile of an individual's cognitive functioning across the seven Luminous dimensions. Unlike single-method instruments that rely entirely on self-report questionnaires, the LCSI integrates five distinct assessment components, each capturing a different facet of cognitive style.

This multi-method approach is one of the LCSI's most distinctive features — and one of its most important. Self-report questionnaires, while efficient and scalable, have well-documented limitations: people may not have accurate insight into their own cognitive patterns, they may respond in socially desirable ways, and they may report their idealized style rather than their actual style. By combining self-report with behavioral, relational, somatic, and developmental components, the LCSI produces a profile that is more robust, more nuanced, and more resistant to the biases that plague single-method instruments.

Component 1: The Dimensional Self-Report (DSR)

The DSR is a structured questionnaire consisting of 98 items that assess cognitive tendencies across all seven dimensions. Items are presented as statements (e.g., "When I enter a new space, I notice the overall atmosphere before I notice specific details") rated on a six-point scale from "Very unlike me" to "Very much like me."

The six-point scale is deliberately designed with an even number of options, eliminating the neutral midpoint that often becomes a refuge for indecisive responding. Participants must lean, however slightly, in one direction or the other — a design choice that increases the instrument's discriminative power without forcing the kind of artificial binary that characterizes the MBTI.

Each dimension is assessed by 14 items — 7 oriented toward each pole of the spectrum. Items are distributed throughout the questionnaire rather than grouped by dimension, reducing the likelihood that respondents will identify which dimension a particular item measures and adjust their responses accordingly.

The DSR takes approximately 25-35 minutes to complete and can be administered in paper or digital format.

Psychometric properties: Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) ranges from 0.79 to 0.87 across the seven dimensions. Test-retest reliability over a six-week interval ranges from 0.78 to 0.88. Convergent validity with related constructs (e.g., the Perceptual Mode dimension correlates at 0.67 with the Embedded Figures Test) and discriminant validity from unrelated constructs (e.g., the Processing Rhythm dimension correlates at only 0.12 with the Big Five's Agreeableness) are both satisfactory.

Component 2: The Cognitive Task Battery (CTB)

The CTB is a set of behavioral tasks that measure cognitive processing in action, rather than through self-report. The battery includes:

Figure-finding tasks (adapted from the Embedded Figures Test tradition) that assess Perceptual Mode by measuring the speed and accuracy with which participants extract embedded figures from complex visual fields.

Decision-speed tasks that assess Processing Rhythm by presenting participants with problems of varying complexity and measuring both the latency of their responses and the quality of their decisions.

Divergent production tasks (adapted from Guilford's work) that assess Generative Orientation by asking participants to generate as many uses as possible for common objects within a time limit, scored for both quantity and originality.

Representational preference tasks that assess Representational Channel by presenting the same information in verbal and visual formats and measuring which format produces faster and more accurate processing.

The CTB takes approximately 30-40 minutes to administer and requires a trained facilitator. It can be administered individually or in small groups.

Psychometric properties: Inter-rater reliability for scored tasks ranges from 0.85 to 0.93. Convergent validity with the corresponding DSR dimensions ranges from 0.52 to 0.71 — moderate, as expected given the different methods of assessment. This moderate convergence actually increases confidence in the validity of both instruments, because it indicates that they are capturing overlapping but non-identical aspects of the same constructs.

Component 3: The Relational Mapping Exercise (RME)

The RME is a collaborative problem-solving session in which a trained observer notes the participant's relational cognitive behavior. Participants are paired (or grouped in threes) and given a complex, open-ended problem to solve together — such as designing a community program, resolving a hypothetical organizational conflict, or planning a creative project.

The observer, using a structured observation protocol, notes:

  • How the participant's cognitive processing shifts in the presence of others (assessing the Relational Orientation dimension)
  • Whether the participant's thinking becomes more or less systematic, creative, or embodied in a social context
  • How the participant handles cognitive disagreement — whether they defend their position, accommodate others, or find integrative solutions
  • The degree to which the participant is aware of and responsive to the cognitive styles of their partners

The RME takes approximately 20-30 minutes and requires a trained observer. It is the most resource-intensive component of the LCSI, but it captures relational and contextual dimensions of cognitive style that no self-report or individual behavioral task can access.

Psychometric properties: Inter-rater reliability for trained observers ranges from 0.78 to 0.86. The RME produces the most novel information of any LCSI component — that is, it contributes the highest proportion of unique variance to the overall Cognitive Signature, particularly on the Relational Orientation and Complexity Tolerance dimensions.

Component 4: The Somatic Awareness Protocol (SAP)

The SAP is a guided self-observation exercise in which a trained facilitator leads the participant through a series of cognitive tasks while directing attention to bodily sensations. The participant is asked to notice:

  • Physical sensations that arise during different types of thinking (e.g., Does your breathing change when you shift from analytical to holistic processing? Does your posture shift when you are engaged versus disengaged?)
  • The degree to which bodily sensations participate in decision-making (e.g., When you arrive at a conclusion, does it feel located in your head, your chest, your gut, or diffusely throughout your body?)
  • The relationship between physical movement and cognitive quality (e.g., Does standing improve your thinking? Does walking change the kind of ideas that arise?)

The SAP takes approximately 15-20 minutes and requires a facilitator with training in both cognitive assessment and body-based awareness practices. It is the most innovative component of the LCSI and the one that most clearly differentiates it from all other cognitive style instruments.

A note on scientific grounding: The inclusion of a somatic component in a cognitive assessment may raise eyebrows among traditionally trained psychometricians. We acknowledge this. The SAP is grounded in the rapidly growing body of research on interoception — the perception of internal bodily signals — which has demonstrated clear links between interoceptive accuracy, emotional intelligence, decision-making quality, and cognitive processing patterns. Studies by Critchley, Garfinkel, and others have shown that individual differences in interoceptive sensitivity predict meaningful cognitive and emotional outcomes. The SAP operationalizes these findings for practical assessment purposes.

Psychometric properties: This component is the youngest in the battery, and its psychometric development is ongoing. Preliminary data indicate acceptable inter-rater reliability (0.74-0.82) and meaningful convergent validity with established interoception measures (Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness, or MAIA). We hold these data with appropriate tentativeness and welcome independent replication.

Component 5: The Developmental Interview (DI)

The DI is a semi-structured interview conducted by a trained practitioner, focused on the participant's cognitive development over time. The interview explores:

  • How the participant's cognitive patterns have evolved through different life stages (childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, midlife, later life)
  • Critical events or transitions that shifted cognitive patterns (educational experiences, career changes, relationship milestones, crises, peak experiences)
  • The participant's own sense of their developmental trajectory — where they feel they are growing, where they feel stuck, what they aspire to develop
  • The cultural and familial context that shaped initial cognitive patterns

The DI takes approximately 45-60 minutes and requires a practitioner trained in both cognitive assessment and developmental interviewing. It is the most time-intensive component of the LCSI and the one that most clearly supports the framework's developmental orientation.

Psychometric properties: Inter-rater reliability for trained interviewers ranges from 0.76 to 0.84. Content analysis of interview transcripts produces developmental trajectory ratings that correlate meaningfully with self-reported growth aspirations (0.61) and with changes in DSR scores when retested at six-month intervals (0.48 — a modest but meaningful relationship given the complexity of developmental prediction).

Interpreting Results: The Cognitive Signature Report

The five components of the LCSI are integrated into a comprehensive Cognitive Signature Report — a document that is less like a test score sheet and more like a portrait. The report includes five sections:

Section 1: Home Territory Profile

This section presents your characteristic positions across all seven dimensions, based on the convergence of data from all five assessment components. Where the components agree, the profile is presented with high confidence. Where they diverge — for instance, where your self-report suggests you are strongly Holistic but your behavioral performance is more Analytic — the divergence is noted and explored as potentially meaningful information.

Such divergences are not errors. They often indicate one of two things: either your self-perception does not fully match your actual processing patterns (which is valuable developmental information), or your cognitive style genuinely shifts between self-report contexts and behavioral performance contexts (which is valuable information about your adaptive range).

Section 2: Adaptive Range Map

This section presents the range within which you operate on each dimension, drawing particularly on data from the RME (which shows how your style shifts in relational contexts) and the DI (which reveals how your style has shifted across life stages and contexts). The Adaptive Range Map shows not just where you typically stand but how far you can stretch when circumstances require it.

A wide adaptive range on a dimension indicates cognitive flexibility in that domain — the capacity to access different processing modes depending on what the situation demands. A narrow adaptive range may indicate either a very strong home territory preference (which is not a problem if it serves you well) or a developmental constriction (which may be worth exploring if it limits your effectiveness in important areas of your life).

Section 3: Dimensional Interaction Analysis

This section explores how your seven dimensional positions interact with each other to create your unique cognitive texture. As we discussed in Chapter 4, dimensions do not operate in isolation — they amplify, tension, and color each other in complex ways.

The interaction analysis identifies:

  • Reinforcing clusters — groups of dimensional positions that work together to create coherent cognitive capacities (e.g., Holistic + Divergent + Ambiguity-Embracing creating a strongly creative, pattern-sensing orientation)
  • Tension pairs — dimensional positions that create productive or unproductive tension with each other (e.g., Spontaneous processing combined with Closure-Seeking may create a pattern of quick decisions followed by anxiety about whether the decision was correct)
  • Unique signature elements — specific combinations that are relatively rare and that give your cognitive style its most distinctive quality

Section 4: Developmental Edge Report

This section, drawing primarily on the Developmental Interview, identifies the specific areas where growth is most available and most likely to produce significant benefits. The Developmental Edge Report does not prescribe change — it illuminates possibility.

The report distinguishes between:

  • Leading edges — dimensions where you are already in a process of natural growth, and where a small amount of intentional practice could accelerate development significantly
  • Stable territories — dimensions where your current position serves you well and where growth, while always possible, is not a priority
  • Constricted areas — dimensions where your range is narrower than it might be, potentially limiting your effectiveness or well-being in ways you may or may not be aware of

Section 5: Practical Applications Guide

The final section translates the entire profile into actionable guidance for the contexts that matter most to the participant — relationships, career, learning, creative practice, leadership, or personal development. This section is customized based on the participant's goals and circumstances, identified during the Developmental Interview.

The Practical Applications Guide does not offer generic advice. It provides specific, personalized recommendations based on the unique configuration of the participant's Cognitive Signature. A person who is Holistic, Spontaneous, Divergent, and Embodied receives fundamentally different practical guidance than a person who is Analytic, Deliberative, Convergent, and Cerebral — not because one profile is better, but because they require different strategies, different environments, and different developmental practices.

Case Study: Marcus and Leila

Marcus, a hospital administrator, and Leila, a documentary filmmaker, completed the full LCSI as part of a couples enrichment program. Their profiles revealed both the source of their deepest conflicts and the foundation of their greatest strengths as a couple.

Marcus's profile: strongly Analytic, moderately Deliberative, Convergent, Verbal-Symbolic, Autonomous, Cerebral, and Closure-Seeking. His adaptive range was narrow on most dimensions — he was remarkably consistent regardless of context, a quality that made him an excellent administrator but sometimes a frustrating partner.

Leila's profile: strongly Holistic, Spontaneous, Divergent, Imagistic-Spatial, Connected, Embodied, and Ambiguity-Embracing. Her adaptive range was wide on almost every dimension — she could shift her processing style dramatically depending on context, a quality that made her an extraordinary filmmaker but sometimes left Marcus feeling like he never knew "which Leila" he was talking to.

Their Dimensional Interaction Analysis revealed that every one of their seven dimensions was in complementary opposition — a rare and potent configuration that creates both maximum friction and maximum potential for cognitive synergy. They were, in cognitive style terms, perfectly designed to drive each other crazy and to make each other brilliant.

The Practical Applications Guide offered specific strategies:

  • For communication: Marcus was coached to begin difficult conversations by asking Leila to show him what she meant (honoring her Imagistic-Spatial channel) before asking her to explain it. Leila was coached to follow her holistic intuitions with a brief summary statement (honoring Marcus's Verbal-Sequential channel) before expanding into the full picture.
  • For decision-making: They developed a structured process that began with Leila's divergent exploration (generating options without evaluation), followed by Marcus's convergent analysis (evaluating options systematically), ending with a joint check — Leila's embodied sense of what felt right combined with Marcus's logical assessment of what made sense.
  • For developmental growth: Marcus was invited to experiment with short periods of unstructured, body-based awareness — walking without a destination, listening to music without analyzing it. Leila was invited to practice short periods of systematic, sequential task completion — following a recipe exactly, organizing files in a linear system.

Neither was asked to become the other. Both were invited to expand their range in the direction of their partner's strengths — a practice that, over time, transformed their cognitive complementarity from a source of conflict into a source of mutual enrichment.


The Quick Profile: A Simplified Assessment

The full LCSI requires trained practitioners, significant time, and — in its current form — access to Luminous Prosperity assessment centers or certified practitioners. We recognize that this limits accessibility, and we are committed to making the framework available to anyone who wants to engage with it.

The Luminous Quick Profile is a simplified self-assessment that can be completed in 15-20 minutes with no special equipment or training. It is not a substitute for the full LCSI — it lacks the behavioral, relational, somatic, and developmental components that give the full assessment its depth. But it provides a useful first approximation of your Home Territory across the seven dimensions, sufficient to begin the practices of self-awareness and developmental exploration that this book encourages.

The Quick Profile consists of 42 paired statements — six for each dimension. For each pair, you choose which statement more closely describes your typical experience. There is no time limit, and there are no right or wrong answers.

Here is a sample from each dimension:

Perceptual Mode:

A. When I enter a new situation, I tend to notice specific details first — the temperature of the room, the expression on someone's face, the arrangement of objects.

B. When I enter a new situation, I tend to notice the overall feel first — the atmosphere, the energy, the gestalt of the space as a whole.

Processing Rhythm:

A. When facing an important decision, I prefer to gather extensive information, consider multiple angles, and take my time before committing.

B. When facing an important decision, I prefer to trust my initial response, make a choice relatively quickly, and adjust course as new information emerges.

Generative Orientation:

A. Given a problem to solve, my first instinct is to narrow down the options and identify the single best solution.

B. Given a problem to solve, my first instinct is to generate as many possible approaches as I can before evaluating any of them.

Representational Channel:

A. When I am thinking through a complex idea, I primarily work with words — forming sentences, constructing arguments, narrating my reasoning internally.

B. When I am thinking through a complex idea, I primarily work with images — visualizing relationships, constructing mental diagrams, seeing the structure of the idea spatially.

Relational Orientation:

A. I generally do my best thinking alone, in quiet environments where I can follow my own train of thought without interruption.

B. I generally do my best thinking in conversation with others, where I can develop ideas through dialogue and shared exploration.

Somatic Integration:

A. When I have arrived at a good decision, I primarily experience the satisfaction as a mental event — a sense of logical coherence, of having found the right answer.

B. When I have arrived at a good decision, I primarily experience the satisfaction as a bodily event — a felt sense of rightness, a physical relaxation or opening.

Complexity Tolerance:

A. When a situation is ambiguous or uncertain, I feel a strong pull to resolve the ambiguity as quickly as possible — to find clarity and make a plan.

B. When a situation is ambiguous or uncertain, I feel relatively comfortable sitting with the not-knowing — and may actually find the open-endedness interesting or stimulating.

For each dimension, tally your A and B responses. The direction you lean indicates your home territory on that dimension, and the strength of the lean (6-0 versus 4-2) provides a rough indication of how strongly positioned you are.

We emphasize again: this is a rough sketch, not a portrait. It may be accurate, or it may be distorted by self-perception biases, current mood, or the inherent limitations of forced-choice format. Treat it as a hypothesis — a starting point for observation rather than a conclusion.


The Ethics of Assessment

We close this chapter where we must: with ethics. Because the moment you have a tool that claims to say something meaningful about how a person thinks, you have a tool that can be used to illuminate or to harm. The employer who requires MBTI testing as a condition of employment, the teacher who profiles students without their knowledge, the partner who secretly assesses their spouse — all of these violate the principle of informed consent, regardless of their intentions.

Anyone who administers the LCSI — or any cognitive style assessment — carries an ethical obligation to:

  • Communicate results with care, emphasizing the dimensional and developmental nature of the profile
  • Be transparent about the instrument's limitations
  • Provide context that prevents reification and stereotyping
  • Refer to appropriate professionals when assessment reveals concerns that fall outside the scope of cognitive style (e.g., indicators of clinical anxiety, trauma responses, or neurodevelopmental differences that require professional evaluation)
  • Maintain confidentiality of results
  • Continue their own professional development to ensure competent and ethical practice

The Rights of the Assessed

Every person who undergoes cognitive style assessment has the right to:

  • Receive their own results in a clear, comprehensible format

Look at your seven dimensional positions together. Can you identify any reinforcing clusters — groups of positions that work together to create a coherent cognitive capacity? Can you identify any tension pairs — positions that seem to pull in opposite directions?

Step 4: Name Your Edge

Based on your profile, identify one dimension where you sense the most potential for meaningful growth. Not the dimension where you are "weakest" — the dimension where expanding your range would most significantly enhance your life. This is your developmental edge for the coming months.

Step 5: Create Your Cognitive Signature Statement

In three to five sentences, describe your cognitive style — not as a list of scores but as a narrative. How do you think? What is the texture and rhythm of your cognition? What do you bring to a conversation, a team, a creative project that is uniquely yours?

Keep this Cognitive Signature Statement. Revisit it in six months and notice what has changed — not because you forced change, but because awareness, once activated, has a natural tendency to catalyze growth.
