Appendix A: Your Nervous System Survival Toolkit
Everything in this appendix exists because your neurology affects every facet of your life — and your clients' lives. Not just emotions: perception, relationships, capacity to show up for the things that matter. The tools here aren't about managing symptoms. They're about returning control to the system. This appendix is written to both the clinician and, by extension, any client the clinician chooses to share it with.
None of this is medical advice. All of it is real.
Medication: The Two-Sentence Version
There are two medications that specifically target the rejection sensitivity piece: guanfacine and clonidine (alpha-2 agonists). They modulate norepinephrine in the prefrontal cortex — essentially strengthening the connection between the thinking brain and the alarm system. Other ADHD medications (stimulants like methylphenidate and amphetamine-based meds, non-stimulants like atomoxetine) help indirectly by improving overall emotional regulation. The prescriber runs the decision. That's the medication section.
Dopamine Precursors: When a Client Is in a Pinch
If the person is in a low-dopamine state — flat, unmotivated, can't start anything, everything feels pointless — two natural precursors can help bridge the gap:
Mucuna pruriens — a natural source of L-DOPA, the direct precursor to dopamine. Available as a supplement. Not a replacement for medication, but a meaningful boost. Start low.
L-Tyrosine — an amino acid that the body converts into dopamine via L-DOPA. Available everywhere. Useful for acute low-dopamine moments. Some people take it before high-demand situations.
These are tools, not treatments. They work. They're not a substitute for working with a provider on the full neurological picture.
The Anxiety Protocol: Valerian → Skullcap → Kava Kava
If the nervous system is screaming and it needs to calm down NOW, here's the order I'd try:
- Valerian root — the gentlest option. Mild sedative properties. Good for everyday background anxiety. Available as capsules or tea.
- Skullcap — stronger. Specifically targets nervous tension. Works well for the kind of buzzing, wired anxiety that won't let the body settle.
- Kava kava — the most powerful option here. The liquid extract form works almost immediately and fades off gradually. Fast, effective, and the liquid form is notably potent.
CRITICAL: Never mix kava with alcohol. This is non-negotiable. The combination is dangerous. Kava on its own, in reasonable amounts, with awareness — that's a tool. Kava with alcohol is a risk.
These aren't prescriptions. These are options that exist, that many people find helpful, that can be researched and discussed with the provider.
Check the Neurological Baseline
This one could save years of misattributed suffering:
If your client also has a migraine disorder or any other neurological condition — check that out. Migraines and other neurological conditions can produce symptoms that look exactly like RSD, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation. Sometimes what's been treated as a mental health issue is actually a neurological one — and when the neurology gets addressed, the symptoms go away.
Same presentation. Completely different root cause. If nobody has run this down for them, suggest it.
Magnesium: The Most Underrated Tool in This Entire Book
Magnesium depletion looks like RSD. The irritability, the emotional reactivity, the feeling that everything is too much — it can be a magnesium issue masquerading as a psychological one.
Natural Calm and other effervescent magnesium drinks work fast. Not hours — minutes. One glass and the nervous system settles. This isn't placebo; magnesium is directly involved in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body, including neurotransmitter regulation and nervous system function.
Drink it. Have clients drink it every hour if they need to. Keep it at the desk, in the bag, on the nightstand. This is infrastructure.
The Sensory Processing Protocol
This is the one tool that changes everything else.
The Wilbarger Brushing Protocol (also called the sensory processing protocol) was designed to literally integrate, heal, and strengthen the entire nervous system. It works holarchically — address one part of the nervous system and the whole thing gets better. That's how holarchical systems work: the part contains the whole.
What's needed: A sensory brush. About $3 on Amazon. That's it.
How long it takes: The full protocol takes about 12 minutes. There are excellent walkthroughs on YouTube — find one from an occupational therapist and follow along.
What it does: Deep pressure brushing followed by joint compressions. It recalibrates the sensory processing system. Over time — sometimes surprisingly quickly — the nervous system becomes more integrated. Stimuli that used to overwhelm become manageable. Emotional reactivity decreases. Not because anything is being suppressed, but because the nervous system is actually processing information accurately instead of in emergency mode.
Here's the connection that matters: the more integrated the nervous system is, the more reality is clear. And in reality, the client is being rejected almost never. They feel rejected all the time — but that's signal processing, not truth. When the nervous system integrates, that distinction becomes available in real-time. Consciousness clears up. That's not a spiritual claim. That's neurology.
The Massage Gun: 10 Minutes That Replace 30
A percussion massage gun can give the same nervous system relaxation as 30 minutes of yoga, except it takes 10 minutes, it's portable, and some of them charge via USB-C so one can live in the client's bag.
The body is tense. The body is scared. It's holding that. Ten minutes with a massage gun on the neck, shoulders, upper back, and jaw can discharge the physical component of the emotional state. This matters because the nervous system reads body tension as confirmation that there's a threat. Release the tension, and the threat signal drops.
Two price points worth considering:
- ~$40 (USB-C, portable): Gets the job done. Throw it in the bag. Use it at the desk, in the car, anywhere tension needs to discharge fast.
- ~$220 (professional grade): Will last a lifetime. Deeper percussion, more settings, built to run daily for years.
Yoga is beautiful. Yoga is a practice. But when the client is walking into a 20-minute interaction and their jaw is clenched so tight they can hear their teeth, they need speed. This is speed.
The Integration Point
Every tool in this appendix serves one purpose: returning control.
Not control over emotions — control over the capacity to be present with them. There's a difference. The first is suppression. The second is integration.
The more integrated the nervous system becomes — through magnesium, through sensory processing work, through releasing the physical tension the body stores — the more accurately reality gets perceived. And in an accurate reality, the person is enough. They are not being rejected. They are a nervous system learning to run at the frequency it was built for, with the right fuel and the right maintenance.
That's all this is. Maintenance for a high-performance system.
