What Ayres Sensory Integration Actually Is

A. Jean Ayres, an occupational therapist and neuroscientist working at USC in the 1960s and 70s, developed what became one of the most clinically significant frameworks in developmental neuroscience. Her foundational insight was elegant and radical: the nervous system organizes itself through sensory experience.2 Not through talking about sensory experience. Not through understanding it. Through the actual, embodied, real-time processing of proprioceptive, tactile, vestibular, visual, and auditory input.

Ayres’ original work focused on children with learning and developmental differences — children whose nervous systems were struggling to integrate the flood of sensory information the body sends upward every moment. But the mechanisms she identified are not pediatric. They are neurological. They apply to every nervous system, at every age, that is dysregulated, overwhelmed, or poorly integrated.3

The Holarchic Principle

When you integrate one part of the nervous system, you integrate the other parts. A holarchy is a hierarchy of holons, where each holon is simultaneously a whole unto itself and a part of a larger whole.4

The nervous system is not a collection of isolated modules that must each be fixed separately. When you work with the proprioceptive system through joint compressions, you are not just working with joints. You are sending regulatory signals through the entire central nervous system. When you activate the vestibular system through specific movement, you are recalibrating the arousal baseline of the whole organism. One well-placed intervention creates ripples of integration throughout.

This is why ASI is so extraordinarily high-leverage for RSD. A 12-minute sensory brushing and compression protocol, done consistently every 90 minutes throughout the waking day, does not merely “calm the body.” It progressively recalibrates the entire nervous system’s baseline threat sensitivity — the very mechanism that generates RSD reactivity.5
